Louis E. Costa, D.O.

Dr. Costa is a Central Pennsylvania native. He was raised in rural Sunbury and is an alumnus of Shamokin Area High School. Dr. Costa is board certified in general surgery and fellowship trained in Advanced Laparoscopy. He established Midstate Institute of Surgery after completing a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery under the direction of Dr. Joseph B. Petelin, a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery, at The Surgix Institute, Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Dr. Costa believes in using minimally invasive techniques for a quicker recovery so patients may return to their daily routine in much less time.

Dr. Costa has built a reputation of being patient focused with a compassionate bedside manner. He is a champion of effective patient communication and education. If a patient understands his or her disease process and surgical treatment plan, then he or she can actively participate in recovery and healing.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Costa enjoys the opportunity to teach and train students and surgical residents. He is also actively involved in many local, state and national medical and surgical organizations. Along with the broad scope of general surgery, he specializes in: abdominal, endocrine, breast, digestive, focusing on a minimally invasive approach when possible; as well as select bariatric, venous and endoscopic procedures.

Dr. Costa earned his B.S. degree in biology from Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA. He received his M.S. and D.O. degrees from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a surgical internship and residency at Pinnacle Health in Harrisburg, PA. Dr. Costa's wife, Sandra R. Costa, D.O., is board certified in Family Medicine and practices in Lemoyne, PA.
